Learning Aikido
Martial arts have always been very popular in the United States
and one of the more popular ones recently is Aikido. One great
example of Aikido is the actor Steven Seagal, who practices this
type of martial art. His movies alone are one of the reasons that
it has become so popular. However, Aikido has actually been around
for a very long time and has a very interesting history and dates
all the way back to the 1940s in Japan.
The founder of Aikido is Morihei Ueshiba and he was born on
December 14, 1883. He grew up in modern Japan and had witnessed
how thugs would vandalize and terrorize his father regularly. As
time went on Morihei decided that he was going to become as
possible and seek revenge against all the thugs that terrorized
his father. He was very strong willed and driven and he devoted
every moment of his life to becoming physically and mentally
strong and learning the martial arts.
While training he was able to receive many certificates of
achievement. He held multiple certificates in jujitsu, spear
fighting, and fencing. However, as accomplished and impressed as
he was with his abilities, he was still not happy with his skills.
He began to realize there was more to the martial arts and started
to explore religion. Through religion he was hoping to find a
greater meaning in life, while still pursuing and practicing
martial arts.
He developed Aikido by actually combining the martial arts with
religion. He took his martial arts training and his religious
beliefs and applied them to each other. This style was originally
known as Aikibudo, but by 1942 he changed the name to Aikido.
Aikido is very different than other martial art because it
actually combines many different styles together; they are
jujitsu, aiki-jujitsu, spear fighting, and sword fighting.
Interestingly, Aikido is often thought of as the ultimate martial
art. However, it is based on religion and harmony with one's self.
Aikido actually uses joint locks, weight manipulation, and
different throws that achieve the purpose. It is very effective
and this was the intention of Morihei from the very beginning. The
many techniques used in Aikido is the result if Morihei's creative
combination.
Furthermore, there is actually no unified belief with Aikido. Many
believe there is, but since this martial art is combined of many
there is no one philosophy used. Because Aikido is so full of
heritage and religion, it does strongly believe in harmony and
peace of the spirit. Thus, by developing a higher spiritual belief
Morihei believed that the human body could then be capable of
anything. Even though he initially developed Aikido for revenge,
it later became apparent that Aikido was about reconciling with
one's self and the world and not as much about fighting.
America has been re-introduced to Aikido through Steven Seagal and
the martial art in general has become more popular over the years.
The power of Aikido has been seen through Seagal's movies and in
every day practice. Many martial arts dojos now offer Aikido
training and study all over North America. Aikido can teach you
more than just fighting and self defense. It has the ability to
teach you harmony of both your mind, spirit, and soul all while
helping you to achieve inner peace. |
